TOPIC: Moving a VHD to another location

Moving a VHD to another location 7 Years, 5 Months ago Karma: 0
Hello,

I know that this is surely covered somewhere but I know that VMDK is a more portable format and VHD and VDI is a less portable format. I want to move a VHD from one disk to another and I assume I must convert the VHD to VMDK first and then perform the move? When I just copied over the files and then attempted to add the VHD to VM lite XP mode hard disks I got this error:

Failed to open the hard disk D:\vmlite XP mode\vmlite xp mode.vhd

Cannot register the hard disk 'D:\vmlite XP mode\vmlite xp mode.vhd' with UUID {registry key} because a hard disk 'C:\users\JPD\vmlite XP mode\vmlite xp mode.vhd' with UUID {same registry key} already exists in the media registry

So obviously I can't just move around this folder and its files to another location and run it from there.

If someone has any insight or help. Perhaps you can point me to another post or a site that explains this I would really appreciate it. Again what I want to do is move the vhd from one hard drive to another.

Thank you

Ok after playing with this a little bit I seem to have made things worse. For whatever reason the VHD I was working with reverted back to its last snapshot meaning I lost everything I have been working on for the past few days. this is very frustrating.

Again I am not an expert on this. I did try to just copy over the files and then once I copied them over I clicked on the vhd to try to start it up but you can't start it that way. So I must be missing something.

wow I am really lost now. converting to vmdk didn't do any good. I can't even play this file with vmware. How can this be so complicated? What am I missing? Why won't this work?

Ok I did find this website:
www.my-guides.net/en/guides/general-soft...-virtual-machine-vdi

But it vmlite doesn't have this functionality. You can't create a new VHD using an existing VHD. Why?
