setup eth0:
sorry for having been too short in my last remark!

This is what worked for me with the ICS eeepc-RC1 (27.02.2012) build of android.org on my dell D505 (as a host for the VM under VB):

open a terminal on the VM with ALT+F1

then use:
netcfg eth0 up
netcfg eth0 dhcp
setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8

That's all for the network.

The market and Gmail will not work yet because these apps check whether you have Wifi; I cannot force these apps to use eth0 instead!

service netcfg /system/bin/netcfg eth0 dhcp:

Used the standard ics - build "eeepc - RC1" of android.org (without eth0).

Tried the command (as shown above) in the terminal of the VM:
with service: "netcfg unknown"
without service: "usage netcfg ....".

Any advice?

my mistake, I copied it from the boot script. Your instructions are correct.

BTW, the vnc server is going well, it will allow remoting to non rooted Android devices.

Thanks for the detailed description volker_kempter. It didn't work for me though. When I type "netcfg eth0 up" it says "action failed (no such device)".
If I type only netcfg I get a list containing lo, ifb0, ifb1, sit0, ip6tnl0.

Is there any step to make eth0 available that I've missed?

I can add that if I use the same virtual machine without changing any configuration, and instead install the nightly "generic_x86-20120427.iso" then eth0 shows up and internet works out of the box. However, the login screen and desktop doesn't look the same as in the eeepc build, so I guess the generic iso is built from different source code. Amazing deductive capability, don't you think? Well I don't call me Sherlite without a reason.

activation of ethernet:

glad to hear that I did not miss anything!

Could activate eth0 permanently by editing /system/etc/init.sh and adding there the three commands:
netcfg eth0 up
netcfg eth0 dhcp
setprop net.dns1 8.8.8.8.

Still Gmail and Gmarket do not work:
Can you give some advice how to force Gmail and/or Gmarket to use eth0 instead of Wifi?

@Sherlite Holmes

netcfg eth0:
for the standard ics - build "eeepc - RC1" of android.org that I'm using (from 27 feb 2012) eth0 is indeed shown when you type netcfg.
Do we really talk about the same build? Please check again under Settings - > "about tablet" which build you are using.

"generic_x86-20120427.iso": I suppose this is android froyo (version 2.2). I'm not aware of nightly builds of android ICS?
